My Evolving View on Weight Loss Drugs

At one point, I would have said I was against GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, and that diet and exercise were the best ways to stay healthy and lose weight. But I have seen first-hand how these medications can change lives.

For some who simply cannot fathom changing anything, these drugs have silenced the constant “food noise” in their head, allowing them to pivot away from the desire to eat continuously and make better choices. And losing weight – whichever method you choose – will improve your health.

Do I think everyone should use GLP-1 drugs? No. But for those who have tried everything or for those who feel stuck, they can offer a lifeline. Primal purists may criticise my thinking, but we live in a modern world. When science offers tools that improve lives, it would be foolish to dismiss them. Everyone knows walking is great exercise, for example, but does that mean you avoid travelling by car when needed?

It’s Not “Cheating”

I’ve heard some people refer to GLP-1 drugs as cheating. But unless you’ve been in the shoes of someone who has struggled with their weight, you cannot say you wouldn’t do the same. And Ozempic doesn’t give you a free pass to ignore your diet and health – you still have to work on it.

Most importantly, the hard work begins when you decide to come off it. Nobody wants to be on medication for life (although big pharma would love that), and for many, the upcoming increase in price for GLP-1 drugs will make them prohibitive.

The Challenge of Coming Off

When you stop taking GLP-1 drugs, your appetite returns and your metabolism may revert to its pre-medication state. The food noise that was silenced starts up again, and there’s often a genuine fear that the weight will return.

Too many people continue eating their normal diet, just in smaller portions. They should be using this time to build a stronger foundation – but most don’t know how.

Where I Come In

For those being forced to come off weight loss drugs due to cost, or because they no longer want to rely on them, or perhaps have reached their goal weight, I can help you build the habits that make this transition less worrisome.

We can mimic many benefits of GLP-1 drugs through diet – specifically approaches that promote natural satiety, stimulate ketone production, and address the root causes of food cravings. This doesn’t just mean food (though that’s a large part of it) but also movement and exercise, sleep, sun exposure, reducing toxins, and managing stress.

I can help you find the sweet spot not only for staying at your ideal weight but for feeling good in yourself – whether you’ve just started your GLP-1 journey (where we can begin building that foundation) or you’re about to come off them.
